Lost in NYC? Just ask the locals

New York City has (sorta) jumped on the Consumer Generated Content bandwagon in a unique hybrid campaign, combining celebrity endorsements with a promise that all New Yorkers are ready to become tourism ambassadors.

The multi-media "Just ask the locals" campaign will launch in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Britain and Ireland as NYC goes after the more lucrative long-haul traveler.

Celebrities, including Jimmie Fallon and Robert De Niro have been enlisted to give visitors the inside track on the city's best dining, entertainment and shopping.  An online map/podcast/photo gallery mash-up makes each celebrity's suggested experience easily accessible.  Unfortunately, the interesting bits are only available in English.

Once you arrive in NYC, the campaign encourages visitors to simply "ask the locals."  No word yet on whether any local initiatives are underway to prepare New Yorkers for an onslaught of map-wielding tourists.

Insert your own "how do I get to Carnegie Hall" joke here.
